MEMBER PROFILE: Denver Day

by Brandon Morris

Denver Day has been actively involved with the Little Rock Chapter of Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) since her first meeting in April. She works as a director of public relations at The Heart of Arkansas United Way, which supports health and human services organizations in Central Arkansas, and partners with local agencies on special projects and programs that benefit our community.

“What I like most about my job is being a part of an organization that helps others in need. I feel very blessed to be in this position,” Day replied when asked why she joined the organization.

She always knew that she wanted to do something where she could interact with people. While studying at the University of Central Arkansas, she felt her naturally outgoing personality would work best to major in the field of marketing.

“At that time, I thought I would like to work in sales,” Day comments. “After graduation, I worked for Brinker International as a corporate trainer, traveling across the United States to new restaurant openings. They own large chains like Chili’s and On the Border. I trained and developed managers and new employees on the importance of maintaining focus on customer service, increasing sales, product knowledge, company policy and procedure, and maintaining composure in fast paced, ever changing situations. The constant travel and time away from family began to wear on me.”

Before going to the United Way, Day worked in marketing for two smaller local businesses. She says this is when her marketing efforts were focused on a one-on-one basis and not long-term relationship building.

“I wanted to have a larger impact and interaction with larger groups,” Day mentions. “I love sharing with the public what we do at United Way, sharing the stories of the people we are helping, and building relationships with our donors. I feel it is vital for any nonprofit organization to let their donors know where their dollars are going and what kind of impact it’s having on this community. I am working hard to increase the visibility of United Way in the public and hope to raise more awareness.”

She is responsible for all media relations including social media, print, radio, and television. Day also assist with the production of all communication and campaign tools including campaign video, marketing materials, newsletters, and web page. She specialized in event planning while working as an account manager for more than 50 major companies in the Greater Little Rock area.

When asked why she decided to become a member of PRSA, Day comments, “Being fairly new to this position, I feel I have so much to learn. What better way to learn than to be in the company of 120 other local public relations professionals. Their knowledge and experience is invaluable.”

She enjoys the opportunity to network with other public relations professionals and finds the sharing of ideas “empowering and a vital part to who I am and more importantly who I want to become in my professional and personal life.”

“ I remember attending my first meeting as a new member. Elise Mitchell with Mitchell Communications Group was the guest speaker. Everything she said, hit home to me. The issues she talked about were some of the same issues I had been dealing with. I thought to myself, “This is the perfect group for me. I feel like these people are just like me. This is exactly where I need to be.” I learned so much just from that very first meeting and knew joining PRSA was a great decision.”

Day is a native of Greenbrier, Ark but she loves to travel. She enjoys traveling to any of the beautiful locations the state including the great outdoors. When not traveling in the states or volunteering, she loves to travel abroad – especially Europe.

“My first experience out of the country was a study aboard program with the Marketing Department at UCA. I fell in love with the other cultures. If I had to choose a favorite, it would have to be Ireland. The countryside is breathtaking and the people are so friendly,” says Day.
